Feng Shui for the Bedroom

A restful bedroom starts with the bed. An honest guide to the commanding position, mirrors, colours, and the small changes that improve sleep and relationships.

In Feng Shui, the bedroom governs rest and relationships, and the single most important factor is the bed's position. The guiding idea is the commanding position — placing the bed so you feel safe, supported and in control of the room.

स्थितिThe key rule

The commanding position.

Place your bed so that, lying in it, you can see the bedroom door without being directly in line with it. Diagonally across from the door is usually ideal. This lets you rest with a clear view of who enters — a subconscious sense of safety that supports deep sleep.

Give the bed a solid headboard against a wall for support, and keep both sides of the bed accessible. Avoid placing the bed directly in line with the door (the so-called coffin position, with your feet pointing straight out the door), and avoid sleeping under a heavy beam or a sloped ceiling.

नियमThe essentials

Getting the bedroom right.

Solid headboard & support

A headboard against a solid wall gives a sense of stability. Avoid a bed floating in the middle of the room or with its head to a window.

Mind the mirrors

Avoid a mirror directly facing the bed — it's said to disturb rest and relationships. Both Feng Shui and Vastu agree here. Cover or reposition it if you can.

Calming colours

Soft, warm skin-tones, gentle earth colours and muted blues suit rest. Avoid harsh reds and very bright, stimulating schemes in a bedroom.

Keep it restful

Remove work, exercise gear and as much electronics as you can. Balanced pairs — two bedside tables, two lamps — support partnership.

प्रश्नQuestions

Frequently asked.

What is the best bed position in Feng Shui?

The commanding position: place the bed so you can see the door from it without being directly in line with it — usually diagonally across from the door — with a solid headboard against a wall. This creates a sense of safety that supports deep rest.

Is a mirror facing the bed bad Feng Shui?

Yes — a mirror directly facing the bed is said to disturb sleep and relationships, and both Feng Shui and Vastu advise against it. If you can't move it, cover it at night or angle it away from the bed.

Which colours are best for a Feng Shui bedroom?

Soft, warm skin-tones, gentle earth colours and muted blues create a restful room. Avoid harsh reds and very bright, stimulating colour schemes where you sleep.

What is the coffin position?

It's when the bed is in line with the door and your feet point straight out through it while you lie down — traditionally avoided in Feng Shui. Shift the bed so it isn't directly in line with the doorway.
