Main Door Direction as per Vastu

The entrance is the single most important factor in Vastu — the mouth through which energy enters your home. Here is an honest guide to the best and worst directions, the 32 padas, and what to do if yours isn't ideal.

In Vastu Shastra, the main door is called the mukhya dwar — it decides how energy, opportunity and prosperity flow into a home. But the popular advice you see online is often too rigid: "south-facing is bad," "only north is good." The reality is more forgiving, and more precise: the direction sets the tone, but the exact pada (segment) of the door, and how you keep it, matter just as much.

आठ दिशाThe eight directions

Best to worst, honestly ranked.

North (Kubera)
Excellent

The direction of wealth and opportunity. A north-facing door invites flow of money and new chances — one of the most favoured entrances.

North-East (Ishanya)
Excellent

The sacred corner. An entrance here brings clarity, prosperity and spiritual grace — kept light and open, it is considered the most auspicious of all.

East (Indra)
Very good

The direction of the rising sun — health, vitality and social standing. Morning light through an east door is deeply energising.

North-West (Vayu)
Good

The direction of movement, support and helpful people. A workable, generally positive entrance, good for those who travel or deal with many people.

West (Varuna)
Workable

Gains and results. Acceptable — and several of its padas are genuinely auspicious — provided the entrance itself is well kept.

South-East (Agni)
Mixed

The fire corner. Usable, but it can bring restlessness or friction; it needs a careful pada and calm, ordered surroundings.

South (Yama)
Caution

Generally cautioned, but not doomed — specific padas are acceptable, and practical remedies help considerably. The cardinal direction alone doesn't decide it.

South-West (Nairutya)
Avoid where possible

The most cautioned entrance — linked to instability and financial drain. If unavoidable, the pada choice and remedies matter more here than anywhere.

A "caution" direction is not a verdict — it means the pada and the remedies matter more. Very few homes are truly unfixable.

उपायIf yours isn't ideal

Practical fixes, no demolition.

Keep it clear & lit

An unobstructed, well-lit entrance is the single most effective fix. No clutter, shoe piles, or dead plants at the door.

Use a threshold

A raised threshold (or a metal/wooden strip) at the door helps hold and settle the energy of the entrance.

Nameplate & light

A clean nameplate and a warm light beside the door make the entrance active and welcoming — good Vastu and good Feng Shui.

Mind the first view

What you see on entering sets the tone. Keep the space just inside the door open and pleasant, never a wall of clutter or a mirror facing the door.

प्रश्नQuestions

Main door Vastu, answered.

Which direction is best for a main door as per Vastu?

North, North-East and East are the most favoured — associated with wealth, spiritual clarity and health respectively. North-West and West are also workable. The single strongest choice for most homes is a North or North-East entrance kept light, clean and unobstructed.

Is a south-facing main door always bad?

No — this is one of the biggest Vastu myths. A south entrance is cautioned but not doomed. Vastu divides each direction into padas (segments), and a south door in an auspicious pada, kept well, can work perfectly well. The direction alone never decides it.

What are the 32 padas of the entrance?

Vastu divides the boundary of a plot into 32 segments (padas), eight per side. Each pada carries a different influence — some auspicious, some to avoid — so the exact position of your door within a direction matters as much as the direction itself. This is why two south doors can have very different readings.

Can I fix a poorly-placed main door without breaking walls?

Usually, yes. Keeping the entrance clean, well-lit and unobstructed, using the right colours and a threshold, adding a nameplate and light, and how you treat the area just inside the door all help. We prioritise these no-demolition fixes and are honest when a structural issue has no perfect remedy.

Does the main gate direction matter as well as the door?

Yes — for plots and independent houses the compound gate has its own pada and direction, and ideally it complements the main door. For apartments, the flat's own entrance door is what matters most.

What does Feng Shui say about the main door?

Feng Shui calls the front door the mouth of Chi — the mouth through which all energy and opportunity enter. Its advice converges with Vastu: keep the path to it clear, well-lit and inviting, and never let it be blocked or cluttered.
