Getting the details right.
Which way to face
Place the idols so that you face east or north while praying — the idols themselves then face west or south. Facing east at dawn is the classic ideal.
Keep it raised & clean
The mandir should sit a little above floor level, never on the floor, and be kept spotless. A threshold or small platform helps.
Never under stairs or a toilet
A pooja room should never be beneath a staircase, adjoining a toilet, or sharing a wall with one — these placements are considered inauspicious.
Not in the bedroom (ideally)
A dedicated space is best. If it must go in a bedroom, a north-east corner with a curtain or cabinet that can be closed is the respectful compromise.
